Herb gardens are a great way for beginning gardeners to learn how to grow their own food. Get all the tips you need to start an indoor herb garden here.

Beginners Tips To Start An Indoor Herb Garden

  • Choose an herb you will use a lot as herbs tend to be pretty productive and you will get many harvests through the year.
  • Choose an herb that grows well inside. Not all herbs in a garden are created equally. Some that grow best indoors are basil, oregano and chives.
  • Make sure you have a sunny place to grow your herbs. Kitchen windows are great. Since herb gardens don’t take up much space at first, a small space is fine. The space should have at least 3-6 hours of good sunlight, though.
  • You can start from seed or from seedlings purchased at your local nursery. Herb gardening shouldn’t be adding stress to your life so if starting the seedlings off on your own will cause extra stress for you or you are very new to gardening…I suggest purchasing a seedling since the hard work of starting is already done for you.
  • Just like with other indoor plants, you will want to make sure you have pots that have drainage so you don’t get root rot or mold developing. Clay post work best as they are cheap, come in all sizes and help retain enough moisture with drainage so it isn’t too much.
  • Go with store bought soil mix rather than dirt out of the backyard. Not only will it contain food, minerals and a healthy start for your plant, but it will be less likely to make your plants develop an illness from bad soil.
  • Water regularly when the soil is dry. Don’t allow your herb garden to get too dry or it will die. Herbs are easy to grow, but can be susceptible to death or stunted growth because of dry soil.

Trust me…I am not a gardening expert, but with these tips you can take the guess work out of gardening so you can start growing your own food…even if it is only an indoor herb garden to start off with!
