The brief for this project was to create a modern space with areas for entertaining with a French twist. The clients also have a house in the South of France and enjoy gardening but have limited time. They have a large family and enjoy using the garden for parties and occasional dining. The garden is seen from the house from all angles as the rear of the house is mainly glass, both large windows and a glass extension. So the space needs to work from all views, interior to exterior and at all times of the year. It is a small garden with high walls and buildings surrounding the site. Height has been used to re-proportion the space inside these walls. Pleached Limes and tear drop shaped standard Bay trees use the vertical axis to good effect. Trellis work and mirrors soften and reflect the brick walls and the pale tones of the stone echo the interior but have a personality to bring to the design. Lighting is subtle but allows the garden to be an outdoor room. The planting is mainly in blues, purples and whites with silver and a variety of greens. Structure is used to give winter texture and interest. Jasmine and Roses interact with the Iris and other flowering plants to give a succession of glowing colours within this cool palette. The formality of the design is inspired by grand French gardens but with abundant planting. The open spaces are flexible, either as party space or as more intimate areas.
